NATE SMITH - BANGOR and MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Nate Smith, 83, died Oct. 18, 2009, at his home in Miami Beach, Fla. He was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Bangor, the son of Sam and Gussie (Weinberg) Smith. Nate served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a successful businessman in Bangor, and his passions were his family, his Jewish life and all of the Boston sports teams. Nate was a proud member of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Bangor, and Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Aventura, Fla. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Libby (Rosenberg) Smith; and his four older sisters. He is survived by his wife, Karina (Attal) Smith of Miami Beach, Fla.; his two children, Ellen and her husband, Neil Policow, of Sharon, Mass., and Jay Smith of Bangor; one sister, Sylvia Horwitz of Queensland, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Sara, Erica and Mia. Funeral services will be held noon Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the Jewish Center, 118 Center St., Bangor, with Rabbi Steven Schwarzman officiating. Interment will be at Beth Abraham Cemetery, Bangor. Shiva, the Jewish mourning period will be observed Tuesday after the funeral service and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily until noon Friday, Oct. 23, at 234 Center St., Bangor.
